Change is needed

Demand Digital Reform is a movement pursuing protections against tech companies' predatory practices. We are urging institutions to renounce the use of their official social media profiles to create pressure for change.

Continue reading to see why this is urgent, and how your participation will create historical change.

First, we should ask: how much should we keep trusting these companies?

Click here to see how Meta has been choosing profit over people since 2017.

X's algorithm intentionally amplifies outrage to increase engagement.

TikTok sued by the FTC for violating child privacy laws.

Why should we let a system that works like this:

"...the more anger that they get exposed to, the more they interact and the more they consume."

remain the main source of news for those aged 18-54?

When our national conversations happen on a platform which promoted a genocide in Myanmar, should we keep wondering why our political polarization is so high?

If we don't do anything about this happening to our nation's children, who will?

Have you watched it cost you moments with your family? Do you notice it affecting your friends?

Why should we accept this?

Here's the good news: there is no lack of concern, only a lack of action.

Are you willing to be a part of the change?

Up until now, the repercussions these companies have faced have been inconsequential. They have paid fines, issued statements, and then continued operating the same way. In order to force real change, the public must create pressure.

Our singular goal is to solidify support of the following stance:

  • Tech companies have acted without proper concern for the public
  • They knowingly targeted children with products their own research showed to be harmful
  • They have shown an unwillingness to make the fundamental changes they need to
  • It is our responsibility to create the pressure that will force change

Real change looks like:

  • Restrictions on the use of engagement driven algorithms
  • Restrictions on the use of persuasive design patterns
  • Data protections against the surveillance that enables targeted manipulation of users

How to help

Our current focus is to get universities to renounce using their official social media pages. They gain little from their social media presence, and have a clear responsibility to protect students' interests by disengaging. This idea is laid out further in this short essay.

If you would like to see your university join, please sign our petition.

See our Contact page if you'd like to get more involved.
